if the blade is in good condition not rusty or pitted do not sand on it if there is a nice temper line on it you will lose the temper line.
once its gone you will have a hard time trying to get it back.
they make a polishing kit you can get pretty cheap on eBay it comes with a powder polish and oil which is a mixture of clove and Camilla it really preserves the blade well.
