I need to correct my self.

My memory aint too long.

It was the 44 rim fire was replaced with the 44 centerfire.

Here is a Winchester that had a double rim firing pin. Or
what ever you call it.

tabdog;

Good info.

An aquaintance of mine had a 32 rimfire rifle and he thought he would pull a joke (this was in the 60s) on a local hardware and asked them to order him some cartridges, for the old rifle.

Oh, Oh, the joke backfired, next time he was in the hardware, they told him they had his cartridges.... sure enough, a box of brand new 32 rim fire. These were NOT hand gun ammo, they were about 2 inches long. Definitely for his rifle.

Incidently, I never saw a nail gun bigger than 22 cal... were there any, bigger, and why?

Hay Bryan,

I can tell that carterdge is too old
to have been made for a nail gun.

It looks too much like an old rim fire cartredge.

Metal has been eaten away from that cartredge.
The indentions would have been a little deeper
150 years ago.

And no, I never seen a nail gun with that size.

Most likely it is a .58 caliber for the .58 Spencer of Civil War fame. Cartridges were manufactured for them well into the 20th century as the rifle itself was quite popular right after the Civil War.

I posted that an early Repeating Carbine had dual firing pins 180 opposed but I don't see it now for some reason?  Seems like it was a Spencer but my memory fails me.  I think it was .44 or .45 caliber though.  Onus
The first Henry repeating rifles had dual firing pins and rimfire cartridges.  Onus
