The dam break occured in 1890, not in 1881 (work did not even begin on the dam until 1886). You won't find the missing safe, because the same person who reported it missing, Sheriff Buckey O'Neill of Yavapai County (who later died in Cuba as part of the Rough Riders), also reported that it had been found in an article that was published in the Phoenix paper about 10 days later. Should you care to check this out, you'll find copies of the relevant papers on the second floor of the Burton Barr Library in Phoenix, Arizona.
While you won't find the safe, there is a good possibility of you finding other relics of the flood (including antique irons) strewn from the damn site all the way to where the Hassayampa River joins the Gila near Buckeye, Arizona.....however be aware that a lot of the debris was deposited high on the canyon walls in the narrow areas, and in the flatter areas, it's probably under a lot of overburden.
