I remember the documentary also.  The diamonds in question were known to be owned by a Jewish family.  The GI in question sought the help of some local personnel to help him relocate the cache of diamonds.  The reason they left them in the foxhole is they were cutting into each soldiers uniform and flesh.  Two GI's were carrying the diamonds.  They searched for several weeks (I think that is correct, but not positive) and finally located the site of the foxhole.  They had an agreement that if the diamonds were found, a trusted third party would distribute the diamonds to Jewish charities in several countries and the two GI's would never know the exact value of the diamonds or where they distributed.  Well, they found the stash, right where they buried them in 1944 or 45.  I think one GI had died and there was only one at the recovery.  I believe the documentary said the GI got nothing, only the satisfaction of finding the cache and returning them to Jewish charities.  If I remember correctly, this is what happened.  If I am in error on any of the above statements, feel free to correct or fill in anything I missed.
