Also, to learn your detector sit down with the manual and read all the way through it. Next, Read through the manual with your detector beside you and play with it a little just familiarize your self with the controls, meter, etc. and what it is supposed to do. Take your manual with you in the field, make notes about questions you have and keep re-reading the manual until you understand it. Then practice, practice, practice like Adrian said. Can't go wrong that way.
Look for a local detecting club where you can meet others in the hobby. Talk to your friends and acquaintances about your hobby. Eventually someone will mention someone they know who detects, too!
