Ocalasix:
Hopefully you won't have TO SWIM!     :Smiley  anywhere!
If you like being on the water....
You CAN! learn to SCUBA Dive!
When I was working in Huntsville, ALA.... For NASA..
I, belonged to the SCUBA Club there and I taught people/members to Dive!
!   Grin  Now! Hear THIS !!!     Grin
I taught :
A...1 person who only ONE leg ! to dive. (Having one leg is really not a problem in the underwater (SCUBA)
Whose name, I shall NEVER forget !
            Charlie McCarthy
NOW! Comes the Good! PART!  Cheesy
I also taught:
B...Two persons who could not swim ...NOT! a stroke !
& ..One of them was really, really Old! Too! In his 70s !
You see!
Underwater you don't swim !
You propel yourself along with your swim "fins" !
Just ask "Flipper"  Wink
You don't have to be near the surface ... to breathe
'CUZ !
You got your air supply on your back !
AND! You can learn in a weekend !OK!
Now!   :Smiley
Mr. Ocalasix,
What's your  Next problem!   Huh?

Thats not quite true anymore captbild...all the scuba agencies are requirring a surface swim and to float as part of the pool work for there open water certification.  You don't need to be a strong swimmer but do need to be able to be a basic swimmer.

Ocalasix:
I can relate to THAT!   Shocked
Twice* !
In my diving experience(s) I have almost "Bit The Big One!"
It takes an "Almost" to make you take things   Serious!   Grin
But!
I am still diving !

* One time my "line tenders" went for a cup of coffee and the tide changed, wrapping the anchor/salvage ropes around me!
I had the mask & mouthpiece, torn off, ropes around my "bod" and with an anchor on the end of the rope!
Another time, I was diving in a cave @ Morrison(?) Springs, Fla.
When I came up and into the last room,
I HEARD THAT DING "!  (signaling that the last 5 minutes of air had just kicked in!)
I was on my "reserve air" !
 And! I Couldn't find the exit !
The entrance of this cave, is 90' below the surface !   Tongue

Most of the scuba training agencies are international, so it doesn't fall under a law its more of a industry standard.  You need to be certified through a recognized training agency to get air fills, therefore you are pretty much at the discression of those folks to follow their standards.  I think they get together at Dema and update their curriculum.  When I first got out of the Marine Corps they wouldn't recognize my USMC/US Navy training I had to take 2 steps back and take the rec scuba classes to dive in the civilian world.

You know!   :Smiley
That sure sounds like a description of and would fall under the "Federal Guide Lines" of a "Monoply"!   Angry
Which as you know, is slightly, illegal!   Angry

It is more of a international Standard since the certifying agencies are accepted world wide.  They make up the rules PADI, NAUI, YMCA, PDIC, SSI, SDI, TDI, IANTD thats the bigger ones off the top of my head.  I think they get together at DEMA and set up the minimun requirements.  Then they update there requirrements for their levels of training.

That's a part of being a Monoply!
You, a company/group, get togather and agree to a set of rules/regs, that can ONLY be fulfilled by taking a dive course from us!

As in YOUR case...
Do you REALLY, Believe... that the Dive Instruction that you rec'd from them
Was Superior to that you got (Military Diving Rating) in the Marine Crops ?
I don't know about you !
But!
The NAVY Instruction that I rec'd, Yes! I have been in the "Navy" (Mobile Underseas Warfare Unit) as well as "USMC"!
Is one, that I sure won't want to go back thru!
I find it hard to believe that  ANY!   "civilian" trg, is/can be more complete!
